You see athletic trainer Dan Henrichs riding around on his little golf cart, waiting for an injury to happen.
You hear students chiming “Dan, Dan, the trainer man, if he can’t fix it, no one can!”
Henrichs is constantly busy helping students with physical therapy and making sure they are ready to go back to playing the sport they love. The most common sports injury at Carmel is an ankle sprain, but Henrichs says he “runs into the injury of concussions at least once or twice a week.”
For 17 years, Henrichs has only seen concussion injuries increase and get worse.
With different variations of pain, concussions can affect your memory, and even your balance and reactions to light.
“The players that have the most concussions are soccer and cheerleading participants, ” Heinrichs said, “because of accidents involving players getting kicked in the head.”
In order to stay safe, Henrichs suggests athletes “know your limits, and take care of yourself.” The average bench time for a concussion is only a week, but the symptoms can last for as much as a year or more. The proper way to heal a concussion is to get plenty of rest and drink lots of water.
According to Henrichs, in order to prevent sports injuries in general is to “eat right, and work out in the offseason, but especially make sure your equipment fits properly.”
