Eight Carmel students were recognized for their contributions to the Carmel community at the Vicariate I Youth leadership awards on Tuesday, March 14th.

Seniors Brian Arata, Lauren Caffarelli, Debra Dunham, Luke Edwards, Brendan Mason, Grace May, Jack McKernan and Mary Kate Mooney all received individual awards for different categories such as evangelisation and service.

“I’m extremely grateful to be chosen to represent our amazing school and receive this award,” Edwards said. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the teachers at this school.”

Every year, campus ministry nominates six to eight seniors to be presented with this award.

“The award is meant for teens who have leadership roles in their parish,” Campus Minister Kambra French said, “You don’t have to be a senior to receive the award, but our tradition here at Carmel is to award it to seniors.”

The recipients attended the reception where they received certificates for their awards. The evening included dinner, a teen giving a talk about her faith, and a speech from Bishop George Rassas.

“The dinner was terrific, it’s always a great night,” Campus Minister Michael Fitzgibbons said. “It energizes me because we have such great kids to celebrate with.”

“The room was full of young people who have given so much to the church and it made me feel really hopeful for the future of the church in America,” French said. “It gives me hope that this church will stay strong, that the next generation of Catholic leaders will do a good job.”
