As Street Scenes wraps up another stellar year, many of the stars of the space-themed extravaganza who make up Carmel’s show choir are heading straight into another hectic calendar of performances.

“With the Cadence tour starting this weekend, everyone is really nervous but super excited,” senior performer Olivia Atkins said. “Our first appearance being at the Clash of the Sequins is a great opportunity for us.”

The show choir’s first competition, Clash of the Sequins, is tomorrow at Naperville North High School. Cadence members are putting the polishing touches with a practice after school today so that they can nail down a new Bruno Mars medley and several other surprise selections.

“We are bringing something new to our usual layout this season. We are doing different styles of music and songs than from what we are used to and are bringing more complicated choreography to all our songs as well,” senior Daniel DeWald said.

Even though the performance is at 11:00 tomorrow morning, the Cadence members will arrive at Carmel bright and early at 7:30 a.m. to get dolled up with attention to their performance makeup set and hair.

It’s a long day for the group, which will have to wait about six hours to find out their scores when the results of the competition are released at 5:00 p.m.

Some of the performers are just happy to hit the stage.

“The show has lots of energy and is so fun to perform,” Atkins said.

And tomorrow is just the first step in the race through a very busy season.

A week from today, Cadence starts its tour of area middle schools. These are long days as the group will run through as many as a dozen performances on each tour day.

Each show allows the performers to act as ambassadors for Carmel’s Fine Arts Department and to recruit new students. But the performers don’t seem to mind.

“It’s exciting for audiences to see how hard we’ve worked” DeWald said.
