On Wednesday afternoon, over 100 students, faculty, staff, coaches and parents gathered to watch 9 Carmel student athletes commit to play college sports.

“This is a great moment for all of these student athletes,” Athletic Director Andy Bitto told the crowd. “We hope they take Carmel with them to all of these amazing schools across the country.”

A wide variety of athletes were represented at the event, held in the Salvi Arena because of the size of the crowd.

In a first for a Carmel Catholic student athlete, senior Louisa Brackett committed to the Division I equestrian program at the University of South Carolina. Although Carmel does not sponsor an equestrian team, Brackett was still the first Carmel student to ever commit to an equestrian program.

“I’ve been riding horses ever since I was around 9 years old,” Brackett said. “I’m most excited to become part of a sports team that’s part of my school because I’ve never had that before.”

Other seniors signing letters of intent included:

  • Anthony Baumgart, baseball at Albion College in Michigan.
  • Josh Gzesiak, soccer at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota
  • Flynn Johnson, softball at Grinnell College in Iowa
  • Erin Kehoe, golf at the University of St. Thomas
  • Karina Falkstrom, softball at Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, California
  • Angie Salvi, Division I soccer at the University of Vermont
  • John Sfire, NAIA football at Bethel University
  • Jacob Sicco, Division III football at Olivet Nazarene University

All of the student athletes that signed said that they were extremely grateful and excited about their future college careers.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting my teammates and working with the coaches there,” Falkstrom said. “Not to mention we can play and practice all year round. I know this will help me be the best player I can be.”
