Gymnastics continues to roll

Team closes out strong regular season with back-to-back victories

At the beginning of the season, the Carmel gymnastics team set the goal to win the state championship for the first time in 5 years. After their final two meets of the regular season, they seem to be peaking at the right time.

The Corsairs rolled to a victory in their final two meets of the season last weekend at the Barrington Tri meet at Barrington High School, and on Tuesday night as they defeated New Trier High School bringing in their highest numbers of the season and ending the regular season on an extremely high note.

The weekend meet honored the team’s six skilled seniors as the team celebrated senior night.

“We were all really excited to compete not only because it was senior night,” senior Anna Osowski said, “But also because we were going against Prairie Ridge Co-op and they won state last year.”

The Corsairs defeated both Prairie Ridge Co-op and Barrington behind strong performances from Osowski, who got first on the uneven bars and the all-around competition and senior Sammi Lococo, who won balance beam with an astounding 9.75 and got second all-around. Freshman sensation Isabella Kropiewic got second on vault and third on bars, and senior Sam Wahlers got second on floor.

“Just seeing all of the hard work in the gym translate to the meets is amazing,” Lococo said. “Even though we hit our high score of the season, we still have a lot of room to improve.”

The team’s determination is even more evident when the statistics show that the team has won 6 of its 8 tournaments and come in second for the other two

Now, the team will begin preparing for regionals, which will be held at Carmel for the first time since 2010, on Thursday at 6pm in the Salvi Arena.

“We hope to give regionals our best shot like any other meet we go into,” Osowski said. “We just want to go in with a mindset of determination.”
