It’s not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off Nakatomi Building

Die Hard (1988) rated R

Nothing screams Christmas like the beautiful screeches of famed action hero Bruce Willis in the universally-loved action film simply titled Die Hard. Willis plays the horrendously unlucky and ten-time-award-winner for most American name, John McClane.

McClane, a New York City police officer, visits his estranged wife and children on Christmas Eve. He and his wife head to her place of work for a Christmas party, but little do they know that domestic terrorism is about to take the forefront of the night’s festivities. The Grinch himself, Hans Gruber (played by the late and pre-Professor-Snape Alan Rickman), takes the form of a German terrorist looking to make a good chunk of change.

McClane realizes he’s the only bad boy bad enough to take on the Slytherans…wait…Germans, and begins his one-man campaign to save his wife and the other hostages, all while trotting around with no shoes on–despite the fact that he is running through glass and bullets and dead bad guys.

The film is an action masterpiece, forever cementing Brucey “Whatchu Talkin ‘Bout” Willis as the American sweetheart of action films. I would argue that it is also one of the best Christmas movies of all time.

Never has an action film felt so festive and full of holiday cheer. The acting is great, the campiness is at a reasonable amount, and the action is beautiful. On top of everything this movie has going for it, it has one of the greatest catchphrases of all time (and, by the way, one that becomes absolutely hilarious when it gets censored. Great changes include “yippee-ki-yay, My Friend,” or “yippee-ki-yay, Mr. Falcon.” My personal favorite has to be “yippee-ki-yay, Melon Farmer.” If only Kidz Bop was this clever.)

While it will probably be on TBS and TNT and any of those upper cable channels that start with T, you can rent out this Christmas flick for as low as $2.99 on YouTube, Amazon, and iTunes. Do yourself a favor over this Christmas break and watch this work of art.
