On Saturday, the Carmel gymnastics team won its first meet at the Al Galatte Invitational in Rolling Meadows.

The team, which features six seniors, stood on top of the podium by edging out Lincoln Way Co-Op by just 0.7 points.

“It felt really good to start [the season] with a win,” senior Sammi Lococo said. “It’s a great meet to help get the jitters out.”

Lococo finished first in the floor exercise and senior Samantha Whalers scored 8.950 on the balance beam, good enough for second place. Senior Alyssa Legarreta finished fourth on the beam as well.

Senior Anna Osowski added a third place finish in the uneven bars.

“It was a big surprise that we won our first meet of the season,” Osowski explained. “It gave us the boost of confidence that we all needed to start of the season well.”

After finishing 3rd in the state tournament last year, the girls expect to be right back in the hunt for the state championship this year.

“I’m super excited for the rest of the season,”  Lococo said “and hopefully you’ll see us back at state.”
