13 Frightfully Good Flicks
Michael Edicola, Editor
Halloween is a spooky, scary time enjoyed by children and man-children alike. What better way to celebrate Halloween than a good film that may leave you looking over your shoulder every time you go to get a snack.
1. The Shining (1980) [Rated R]
The Shining is an all time classic suspense-horror film that needs to be seen. Directed by renowned director Stanley Kubrick and starring resident crazy man Jack Nicholson, this movie will leave you feeling unsettled from start to finish. With strange dialogue and unexpected scares, this film doesn’t need to rely on jump scares to terrify. This is a must watch, and it can be found on YouTube, iTun...
2. The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)
An overall chilling experience, The Twilight Zone remains a timeless tv show because of it’s creative stories and twists. Mastermind Rod Serling helmed this project, not only narrating each episode but writing a vast majority of them as well. The tales presented in each episode are sure to stick with you for quite some time. Another must watch for all, and it’s first four seasons can be streame...
3. Black Mirror (2011-Present)
In the same vein as The Twilight Zone, Black Mirror is a wonderful tv series that focuses on different stories with each episode. The best way I could describe Black Mirror is that it’s basically The Twilight Zone if it focused more on technology and the modern world. It’s stories are rich with ideas that aren’t really that far fetched if you think about them. A chilling show that really doesn’t...
4. The Blair Witch Project (1999) [Rated R]
While this film has a somewhat mixed reception, it’s undeniable that The Blair Witch Project brought the found footage genre to the mainstream. It’s meticulous pacing allow for an overwhelmingly terrifying film about a group of documentary filmmakers going crazy in the woods. This film is another reminder of a time when horror films didn’t need jump scares to spook an audience. For maximum ter...
5. The Babadook (2014) [Not Rated, But It’s Totally R]
The surprise hit that was The Babadook seemingly came out of nowhere. An australian horror film with a very low budget, this horror masterpiece makes the most of what it’s got. Another film with a lack of jump scares (I really don’t like jump scares, don’t get me started), this stunning picture follows a mother reading what seems like a harmless bedtime story to her son. It turns out to be much...
6. Stranger Things (2016-Present)
If you haven’t seen Stranger Things yet then what are you doing? Get on it! This Netflix original show came out of nowhere and has quickly become a cult classic. With a second season already on it’s way, it’s safe to say you should start watching as soon as possible. If you love the 80’s, Dungeons and Dragons, and frozen waffles this is right up your alley.
7. A Girl Walks Alone At Night (2014) [Not Rated, But You Get The Drill]
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is a black and white horror film about a skateboarding vampire who attacks men who disrespect women. Do I have to say more? Another surprise gem, this film has been well received by critics and, in my opinion, worth a watch. It is subtitled though, so keep that in mind. This movie can be streamed now on Netflix....
8. Hush (2016) [Rate R]
Hush is a thriller, horror film that follows a deaf girl being stalked by a creepy man with an even creepier mask. While I haven’t seen this one personally, I’ve heard very good things about this one, and most critics seem to agree with that. Sporting a resounding 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say you’ll find some enjoyment out of this horror flick. You can find it now on Netflix....
9. What We Do In The Shadows (2014) [Rated R]
What We Do In The Shadows is a hilarious horror-comedy that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good vampire flick. The movie follows four vampires living in New Zealand, and is shot in a fashion similar to The Office. I found myself rolling on the floor laughing more than once, and it’s definitely a fun film to watch in a group. Do yourself a favor and check this one out. It can be rented on Y...
10. Hocus Pocus (1993)
If you grew up watching Disney as a kid, you’ve definitely seen Hocus Pocus. This campy Halloween film involves witches, salt product placement, musical numbers, and a good helping of teenage angst (The key elements of a campy film). While not a “masterpiece,” this fun and goofy adventure is sure to be a good time for the whole family. You can rent it on YouTube, iTunes, or Amazon for as low a...
11. Halloweentown (1998)
If you watched Disney around Halloween time, you’ve more than certainly seen Halloweentown. Although it’s quite lacking in salt product placement and musical numbers, this fun Disney film is enjoyable for pretty much the same reasons as Hocus Pocus. Witches and teenage angst (What more can you ask for in a Halloween film). This film can be rented for as low as $2.99 on iTunes and Amazon.
12. and 13. Scary Godmother and Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy (2003, 2005)
Scary Godmother and Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy are two of my all time favorite Halloween films and are a must see for me. These “horror,” comedies are short movies that just scream Halloween everytime I see them. The films don’t really have any urgency, it’s just a fun little journey worth checking out. The animation may not hold up well, but these movies are still worth watching....
