Stopping the spread of Pertussis

Pertussis has been among the students for the past couple months and contrary to popular Carmel belief, the stop of the Pertussis cycle is easily reachable with simple steps of precaution.

A number of things must happen in order for a person to acquire a disease and all must be present to obtain the virus:

  1. An infected host
  2. A mode of transmission through direct contact, saliva droplets (from coughing or sneezing), or airborne (finer particles that travel further).
  3. Enough germs to spread it further
  4. A mode of entry (mouth, nose, or a break in the skin).
  5. A person with lowered immunity (fatigue, poor nutrition, already ill).

Precautions we can take:

  1. Stay healthy- take lots of vitamin C
  2. Cover your cough or sneeze
  3. Wipe down desks, doors and lockers
  4. Wash your hands well and often
  5. If you think you could have any form of illness, stay home! Don’t be selfish
