While the story of Jesus’ passion may have happened thousands of years ago, it still impacts everyone in modern times. At Thursday’s Stations of the Cross prayer service, students will relive that tale.

“What I think the Stations of the Cross provides is an opportunity for people to have their eyes opened to the intimacy that Christ has with us,” Campus Minister Kambra French said. “The Stations of the Cross provides an opportunity for it to connect to our own personal lives.”

Stations of the Cross has been a Carmel tradition for several years. This year however, some new changes are coming to the prayer experience like a new setting in the Auxiliary Gym as well as new characters including Mary Magdalene and more of the Apostles.

While the visual storytelling is important to conveying the message of the Stations of the Cross, the music also helps create the setting for the event.

“We look for the music to enhance the prayer experience,” music coordinator Terry Donohoo said, “We want to give them something to reflect on.”

Along with the music, dancers choreographed by Kacey Valentine will introduce the Stations of the Cross and establish the mood for the event while personal reflections will be presented by some students.

Ultimately, the theme of the Stations of the Cross is to be a bridge between the story of Christ and everyone’s own story.

“The hope is that people see that Christ desires to be intimately involved in the story of our life,” French said, “The things that happen in our life can make more sense if we connect them to Christ.”
