Fathers and daughters prepare to cut a rug

Once a year, the ladies of Carmel have the chance to dance the night away with their Prince Charmings, without the nerves and stress other dances can cause. This Saturday is the annual Father-Daughter Dance.

A tradition carried over from when the school was Carmel for Girls and Carmel for Boys, the Father-Daughter Dance is a night for girls to spend time with the important men in their lives. Some go straight to the dance, but others toss dinner into the mix, as well, places like Casa Bonita and Mambo Italiano.

Overall, the atmosphere at the Father-Daughter Dance is nothing but carefree and fun.  Dads seem to enjoy teaching their daughters new, or rather older, moves, and vice versa.

Music selection ranges from modern pop songs to school dance standards like “Greased Lightning” and “Footloose.”

Seniors Abbey Schlicksup and Kileen Albright have known each other since grade school, so their dads, Dan and Kurt, have been friends as well. When Schlicksup told her dad they would be going with the Albrights, he responded, “A night on the dance floor with Kurt, woooo!”Another important stop is the professional photographer available to capture the evening’s activities. Some fathers and daughters even coordinate outfits or bring props for their pictures.

No one has to impress anyone and there is no pressure at all,” religion teacher and freshman class moderator Paulette Stith said. It’s a comfortable dance where everyone is just having fun.”

Tickets are available for purchase at the door for $25. Photo order forms will also be available at the dance.
