Feel the music

Outside talent fills Carmel’s classrooms

Every year, people flock to Street Scenes to gamble, or to eat or to see the student show. Many visitors make sure to take in another important part of Street Scenes: the entertainment.

Equal Opposites, a trio made up of Lucas Turner, Mikhail Mikhaylovich and Rusty, is one of the bands coming in to perform this year. They say that this show has a completely different atmosphere than any other gig.

“It’s mostly people you know, comers and goers,” Turner said. “It doesn’t even feel real.”

Street Scenes director of entertainment, Greg Howland, owns a company that is responsible for booking talents, usually bands in the Lake County and Chicagoland area. Last year, 63 bands performed at Street Scenes, and this year over 50 are booked.

”I’ve been reviewing artists for years and we choose the best, most talented artists,” Howland said.

There is no official review process, but Howland said he views all of the talent coming in before the bands can be booked officially.

“You have to get your music to them,” Turner said, “and they have to say if they dig it or not.”
