Putting the show together

When the curtain goes up on the Street Scenes show, the onstage talent fills the spotlights, but the people behind the scenes are just as important.

The sound and light crews have been prepping to make sure that the actors and singers are seen and heard. Lights need to be programmed, microphones need to be set up, and students need to know where to stand.

The light crew manages the lighting setups through a computer program, changes the look with a push of a button.

“Light crew is a lot of work with light design. They have to hang and focus all the lights in the correct space to make sure it works,” stage manager Kileen Albright said.

Both crews prepare for emergencies when they prepare for the show. Light directors correct problems during the show to make sure that no one gets hurt and the sound crew scrambles to keep the audio up.

“Sometimes mics go out, sometimes the speakers go out,” stage manager Isa Andaleon said. “There’s a lot of panicked organizing.”
