Behind the scenes: Carmel edition
Crossroads explores the unseen places

Sacristy
In between the Brandsma Chapel and the Fine Arts Wing, a room is hidden from students. This is the ultimate “behind the scenes”-- stored in this secret room is everything needed to celebrate mass (and the door to Fitz’s enchanted pony stables). It's a quaint space just like the Chapel it adjoins, and hold campus ministry’s founder’s vast collection of prized “My Little Ponies.”...
Teacher’s lounge
What goes on behind the walls of this room in the 400 hall is a lot less sorcery (except for campus ministries oldest member and his ponies) and a lot more mail-call. Leather couches give this room a homey feel, and on top of that, it's kept at a nice, consistent room-temperature--unlike various classrooms throughout Carmel. Inside the room is a kitchen with a fridge big enough to feed the whole sc...
Dark room
The dark room, located in the Fine Arts Wing, develops both photos, students’ love for photography, and appreciation for nightlights. Dark rooms are a rarity, but this one is frequently utilized both by students and the Dark Side. *Disclaimer: pictures of inside the dark room were unavailable as photos were being developed, and Kylo Ren locked the door.
Tech booth
Only a handful of students will ever get this close to behind the scenes of a Carmel play or musical (theater kids and tech geeks are protective). Before “camera and action” can happen, lights are the first step to any production (actually one needs a marginally decent script). The tech booth in the Auditorium is decorated with memes on the wall and nametags of former students who once called the bo...
South courtyard
Most people will never notice this hidden gem of a courtyard (rumor is it doesn’t exist). Tucked behind the south end of campus near the Business offices, this little courtyard is made up of a few picnic tables and a beautiful statue of Mary. Because it’s not in a very convenient location, students rarely get the opportunity to use it. But nonetheless, this is a perfect secluded spot for peace...
Broadcast room
Carmel has a green screen!? Yes, apparently it does. Rarely seen, this green screen is the perfect background for Mr. Franklin’s Broadcast Club or any aspiring weather reporters. AND LIVE FROM NEW YORK, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT! Just kidding, it's still Carmel, and this little room can be found tucked away, off the beaten path in the IC.
Fine arts bathroom
Hands down, this is the best bathroom in the school. A lot of students who don’t have classes in the Fine Arts Wing never get to experience the luxury of the Fine Arts restroom. Just as spacious as the Science Wing bathroom, with better air circulation than the Lounge bathroom, the Fine Arts restroom is rarely used and mirrors an upscale airport. Unattended baggage will be confiscated. Security l...
Door that’s not a door
What is that? It’s a vague outline of a door. The more important questions: why is it there? Where did that door (that’s not a door) lead to?? Resembling the wall at the train station in Harry Potter, this door (that’s not a door) adds an eerie feeling to the halls of Carmel. It’s probably the creepiest visual when noticed, but many students don’t pay attention to it. Perhaps it leads to a Ro...
Football storage
The overwhelming scent of sweat and laundry detergent fill the storage room in the Auxiliary Gym. Helmets are stacked against the wall and football jerseys line the racks. In a secret corner in this hidden room, every sporting equipment from badminton birdies to tennis rackets to soccer balls are stored away. If students were ever, hypothetically, locked inside Carmel, they would never run out of act...
